Brush and Beyond Artist Talk

EVENT
May 2nd, 5PM

The Arts Fund Community Gallery / FREE ADMISSION

Join us May 2nd at 5PM in the Community Gallery to hear from the artists and curator behind Brush and Beyond: An examination of the human condition. Light refreshments will be available.

Curated by John Hood, Brush and Beyond spotlights Paulo Lima and Nagham Naim, Santa Barbara County artists using diverse media to explore complex topics relevant in our world today.

Curator John Hood says, “The figurative works by Nagham, a Syrian refugee, capture her perilous and determined journey to reach the US in search of a better life. Paulo’s mixed media works are inspired by 19th century Brazilian religious figures, dressed to be displayed in churches or carried during processions. The artists of Brush and Beyond demonstrate the possibilities of what visual art can achieve, while making it approachable and inclusive. Santa Barbara County is home to a wonderfully diverse community of artists and patrons who appreciate variety in creative perspectives. This exhibit addresses a wide range of subject matter, and offers a chance to enjoy a unique blend of painting, sculpture, and mixed media.”

Following the reception, the Gallery will be open to the community during regular hours Wed-Sun 11AM-5PM through May 9th.

The Santa Barbara Transgender Advocacy Network (SBTAN) presents the “Spectrum of Identity Art Show: Celebrating Trans and Neurodiverse Artists.” Following the opening event, admission will be free; the show will remain on display in the Community Gallery until November 1st.

SBTAN seeks art in any medium by artists who identify as trans, nonbinary, agender, genderfluid, (etc.) and/or neurodiverse for an event celebrating and bringing visibility to the beauty and diversity of gender and neurodiverse experiences. The gender and neurodiverse communities have a significant overlap that is not always acknowledged, so this art show is meant to bring awareness to the intersectionality of these identities and uplift those who identify with one or both! All proceeds for any art sold will go directly to the artist. Please contact info@sbtan.org to learn more.
